NEW YORK CITY!!!

Posted in Events on November 2nd, 2011 by Josh

So, it has been a long time since I have posted on here. A lot has happened. In July my girlfriend and I applied for jobs with a company that is in New York City. We both got invited to come interview then a week later were told to be in NYC in 4 days ready to work. So we packed up 3 bags and jumped on a plane. We got here and started looking for a place to live. It was very frustrating and almost didnt happen. We were in a hotel for a second day and we were contacted by a lady who had a room to rent. We went to check it out the next day and Shelley fell in love with it as soon as she saw it. Compared to every other place we looked at, this place was twice as big for almost the same price. So there was no question this was the place for us. We took it and then a hurrican and earthquake later we were on an other plane back to Texas to pack up and drive our stuff here. We had 2 days to pack then start our drive. With 4 hours of sleep, we headed our and we drove for 3 days to get to NYC.  We are finally settled in with the dogs and starting to relax. New York City is a big change but a lot of fun. If your every in Manhattan let me know cause we are always looking for company and always up for a good time.

The above picture was taken this past weekend at Columbus Circle during the freak October Snow storm.

Also, a little advice to anyone wanting to visit Manhattan, come with someone who is from here or has been here a lot and try to avoid all the tourist areas. If you do that then you will have an enjoyable trip.

I will continue to post some stuff on here every now and then just to update whomever is reading this.  Well its back to work and getting ready to help out with the ING NYC Marathon. We have to help with it. I am actually excited about it because it is something I have never experienced and know very little about.

Well until next time keep lifting and working out. Remember to set goals, not just long term but short term as well.

Training Hard in the Summer

Posted in Training Sites on June 22nd, 2011 by Josh

Kyle has been training since he was 9 yrs old. He is now 17 and going  into his senior year in high school. He made it his goal to try and play football his last year. So since the summer began he has been doing a lot of cardio at the high school with his team and lifting with me. This is his job for the summer. I found him sleeping on the job today after his workout.

Training High School Kids!

There are many different ways that coaches approach training high school athletes. Some prove to be more useful than others. Matt Reynolds out of Springfield Missouri wrote on this very topic. It is his way of “Building an Empire“.

Great Day

So it has been a while since I have been able to post on here. So its now the 7th week on the new program and I have to say it is hard but it slowly paying off. Today did not start off the well but made it through the Snatch and Clean and Jerk before things turned around. I set a big PR on the Press at 120kg.

The true test of this program will be show on July 9th. We are hosting a Weightlifting Meet at WFAC. The deadline is June 21st for those who want to come. It is only for local LWC lifters or those who have been personally invited by us. Here is the link to it if you do not have the entry form already. Liberty Open.

Lock and Load Weightlifting Meet Results

Posted in Meets on May 16th, 2011 by Josh

This past weekend myself and 3 other lifters that I coach went to Van Alstyne , Tx for the Lock and Load Meet. This was the first meet for me to do while on the new program. I have to say I still need some more work but everything felt so easy. It tells me that I need to up my weights already.

Everyone did well though.

Michael Robins went 6 for 6 and finished with 80/100/180.

Shelley Hancock went 6 for 6 and finished with 50/65/115.

Taylor Ray did well until he ripped a callous on his thumb while attempting 129kg clean and jerk. He finished with 100/120/220.

As for me I went 5 for 6, missing my usual 130 snatch. However, I Clean and Jerked 160kg extremely easy. My goal for my next meet will be to open with 120 and 160 and go from there. We will see how that goes.

I will have pictures from this weekend soon.

The next meet will be at WFAC in July.

Change is Good

So this week has brought about new and big changes for me and another athlete Bryan Fox. There has recently been a lot of talk on the StartingStrength forum about Olympic Lifting in the USA. Most of the conversation is about how a 19 year Russian woman is stronger than most of our guys and how this problem should be changed. So Mark Rippetoe and myself sat down and came up with a new program based on The Bulgarian Method of Training. Here is what we are doing:

Monday

Snatch x1
Clean and jerk x1

Workout 2
Squat x1
Deadlift x1

Tuesday

Snatch x1
Clean and jerk x1

Workout 2
Front Squat x2
Press x1

Wednesday

Power Snatch x1
Power Clean and jerk x1

Workout 2
Squat x1
Bench x1

Thursday

Snatch x1
Clean and jerk x1

Workout 2
Front Squat x1
Jerk Support x5×1

Friday

Power Snatch x1
Power Clean and jerk x1

Workout 2
Squat x1
Deadlift x1

Saturday

Chins

So far this workout has drained us every day but the next day the pulls are still very strong. We are all interested in seeing what will happen in a few weeks. I will keep everyone up to date on the progress.

Competition

Pyrros Dimas

Andy Bolton

Both of these guys are legends in their sports.

If you have reached a point in your training in which things have plateaued then you should find something to compete in. whether it is Powerlifting, Olympic lifting, Strongman or whatever else might be of interest. You might want to try something new and if that is the case then research it and try to find someone that can help coach you or give you insight into the sport of your choice.

No matter what you choose to do make sure that you give it your all and see it all the way through to the end. Who knows you might like it and continue to pursue it again.

Just look around on the web and see what is going on in your state and sign up for an event that away your are committed and have a goal to guide your training.
